I pray that I’m still dreaming
As this nightmare takes its toll
Slow motion isn’t speeding
To get away and still be whole
Strangled are the cries
As they never make it out
Where is my voice to scream
Stuck in my throat – no doubt
Sweat is pouring down my brow
My feet are heavy weights
Darkness devours all the light
I hear the screeching gates
Suddenly, I’m falling
Deep into the abyss
To jerk awake this thundering heart
Then lie here and reminisce
That last line was unexpected, “reminisce,” in particular.

Thanks Liz! Isn’t that what we do when we wake up from a dream?
